Getting married in Rome
Rome gives you something no purpose-built venue can: two thousand years of backdrop, still in daily use.
Ancient buildings, umbrella pines, cobbled lanes that open onto a fountain, and a light in the late afternoon that makes the whole city look warm.
It's a working capital rather than a resort, and that's part of the appeal — your wedding happens inside a real place going about its day.
Where couples get married here
For civil ceremonies, the Sala Rossa at the Campidoglio on Capitoline Hill is hard to beat, with Michelangelo's piazza just outside the door. Rome also has some of the most beautiful churches anywhere if you're marrying religiously.
For receptions, couples often move out to a villa with a view back over the city — Villa Miani and Villa Aurelia are popular for exactly that reason. Head a little further out and the Roman countryside opens up: I filmed at Casale del Gallo for Daniela and Farid's wedding.
Filming a wedding in Rome
Rome rewards those that take the time to explore it's roads. A short walk through the streets near your venue — no posing, just the two of you moving through the city — gives the film something no venue interior can.
Early morning is the golden window if you'd like the landmarks: the light is soft, the streets are quiet. A vintage Fiat 500 or a Vespa between locations is a lovely, very Roman touch and films beautifully. Later on, the villa terraces above the city come into their own — the sun drops behind the domes and umbrella pines and the whole skyline turns gold. And because Rome stays open late, the evening has a life to it that I'll happily keep filming into.
