Getting married on Lake Como

What a special place! North of Milan, Lake Como sits at the foot of the Alps with mountains rising straight out of the water.

Old villas with terraced gardens line the shore, and the villages of Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo are painted in soft yellows and pinks right down to the water's edge.

For couples who want classic Italian elegance and a view that needs no decorating, it's no wonder it's so loved!

Where couples get married here

Villa del Balbianello in Lenno is the one most people picture, sitting on its own wooded point with terraces looking out over the water. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has huge botanical gardens and hosts civil ceremonies.

Varenna is quieter, with Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero looking straight across to Bellagio. Cernobbio, at the southern end of the lake, is home to grand hotels like Villa d'Este and Villa Erba. You really can't go wrong anywhere!

Most weddings here make the most of the lake itself, with guests arriving by boat and aperitivo on a jetty.

Filming a wedding on Lake Como

I love filming on Lake Como! The lake changes through the day. Mornings are often calm and misty, in summer a breeze usually picks up in the afternoon, so I like to plan portraits for the the last hour before sunset.

I'd highly recommend hiring a boat for a little ride on the lake, it makes for an incredible experience, I usually shoot this with a wide lens to capture all the beautiful surroundings.

I bring my drone everywhere! I'll check restrictions before, but typically Lake Como is a perfect spot for the drone. May, June and September give you warm weather without the peak summer crowds. Whilst the spring and fall offer a bit cooler climate if you're not used to the heat! Honestly whatever the time of year, even winter with snow on the peaks, Lake Como is stunning.
